Inselspital Bern Neubau BB12

A lively district and a high quality stay instead of monotonous functionality – the new BB12 main building of the Bern’s University Hospital is to be occupied in 2024. Like the Berliner Charité, Bern’s University Hospital (Inselspital) founded in 1354 is a medical competence centre of international significance situated on a hill near the city, and it is to be renovated in line with a master plan by Henn Architects dating from 2010. The sixteen storey new build BB12 – known as Coeur d‘ile – will form the centrepiece of the Inselspital and be visible for miles around. The aim of Switzerland’s largest BIM project is to double the gross floor space on the same overall area whilst the hospital is still in operation. Besides architectural issues, procedural and logistic penetration, implementation and performance also play a major role.

The new building, which conforms to the eco standard Minergie P, is organised as a “city in a city” whose level of privacy increases with each floor. The concept created by ASTOC, GWJARCHITEKTUR and IAAG Architects is based around the operational processes and movement patterns of patients, doctors and visitors. As the central reception area, the foyer will in future be the first port of call for many patients. Two central cores and inner courtyards provide a clear focus. The three treatment floors and the administrative floor are characterised by high levels of usage flexibility. The nursing floors receive patients in homely arrival zones and lounges. Warm materials and splendid visual references create a feeling of “home” and a human point of reference in the busy hospital environment.
