Three-phase appraisal process for urban redevelopment and transformation
8. August 2024
ASTOC ARCHITECTS AND PLANNERS and urbanegestalt with Hupe Flatau Partner have developed a concept for the urban redevelopment and transformation into an urban, mixed-use quarter for the approximately two-hectare commercial site in Cologne-Ehrenfeld, which will be used by Thyssen-Krupp AG until 2021. The jury of the three-phase competition, organized by SORAVIA as the owner and project developer and initially involving 10 teams, awarded 2nd prize to our OSKAR entry. We are delighted that our entry was recognized and would like to thank our colleagues from urbanegestalt and Hupe Flatau Partner for the inspiring and fantastic collaboration.
The defining characteristics of our concept are a contiguous green center, a clearly defined address space, the two hall heads as an identity space and a diverse mix of uses. The urban planning concept preserves and emphasizes the large-scale structure of the current steel hall and continues it as a striking location in Cologne’s urban layout. The result is an attractive, green and diverse campus for over 2,000 workplaces in the heart of Ehrenfeld. The concept deals intensively with the continuation and valorization of the existing building structure and the materials used and is to be understood as a holistic contribution of address-forming urban development in front of the Ehrenfeld context, innovative and flexible building concepts in the new building, monument protection and preservation of existing buildings as open space and sustainability.
