1st prize for facade design in Bonn Südstadt
ASTOC ARCHITECTS AND PLANNERS have won the multiple commission for the facade design of the new buildings on the site of the former Hotel Bristol in Bonn. On 18.10.2022 the jury, chaired by Prof. Eva-Maria Pape, met and voted unanimously in favor of the competition entry submitted by us.
On a site in Bonn's Südstadt, Swiss Life Asset Managers is developing a new residential project in two construction phases. The second construction phase, which will be completed by 2026 and will comprise 155 residential units, covers the site of the former Hotel Bristol at the corner of Poppelsdorfer Alle and Prinz-Albert-Strasse. For the design of these facades, five architectural firms were invited to participate in a multiple commissioning process.
The jury's assessment of ASTOC ARCHITECTS AND PLANNERS' entry, which was ranked first, stated: "With its straight facade design and the formation of the curve at the corner of Poppelsdorfer Allee / Prinz-Albert-Strasse, the design provides the right response to the special location. The concept is convincing from an urban planning and user perspective. The outdoor seating area shifted to Prinz-Albert-Strasse brings a gain in living space and quality. The urban dominant in the intersection area is correctly dimensioned. The materiality of the chosen ceramics is timeless and valuable; has the robustness necessary for the location and is not fashionable but modern. The design value of the awnings adds liveliness to the buildings. The closed facade in the intersection area represents a gain in living quality. From the user's point of view, the design is coherent. The café planned for the first floor is integrated in the design and contributes to the revitalization."
