RU-Moscow IFC wins Future Projects Award
The Masterplan IFC Moscow by ASTOC Architects and Planners and HPP Architects has been announced as the winner of the WAN Future Projects Urban Design Award 2016.

In September 2014 ASTOC Architects and Planners, HPP Architects and LAND Srl have been announced as winners for the IFC Moscow Masterplan with their ´Balanced City´ concept. In October the same year further planning stages like the preparation of the urban planning framework and design codes have been started with the objective to begin construction of the first phase in 2017.

The masterplan for the International Financial Center Moscow is the result of an international two-stage masterplan competition. The competition had entries of more than 80 teams from 22 countries in the first stage, 8 internationally renowned companies had been chosen for the second stage.

The 460 hectare site with its 4.1 Million m² gross floor area of mixed-use development will capitalize on the Moscow River’s greenbelt by extending the river landscape throughout the IFC to achieve a balance between nature and city. The design for the IFC is based on the important framework conditions on site: the eye-catching loops of the river and the natural features of its floodplain meadows. The concept of maintaining the existing meadows to create an extensive river-park, introducing elements like generous green rays that connect with the city center and the 35 ha lake in the very heart of the city will create a unique identity. These natural elements will be complemented by characteristic dimensions of the build environment found in each of the neighboring quarters to provide a solid foundation for an unmistakable urban design.

Developing the IFC Moscow with its will be a task for the following 25 years, what is important in the context of a long lasting urban development is that any major decisions are taken based on a robust and transparent urban design plan. The concept will first set out the buildable and non buildable areas and the required dimensions of each element as well as marking the important and outstanding locations within the project area.

The Balanced City will be a special kind of city. It will be a place where a balance of city and landscape, culture and business and ultimately work and life are expressed in the structural layout of the city and where these values can actually be enjoyed in everyday life. This balance is also reflected in the mixed use including different residential typologies, office towers and business parks, hotels, outstanding cultural facilities like the opera house, social infrastructure like kindergartens, schools, sport facilities and hospitals. The project will also contribute to the desired decentralization of Moscow. High-level jobs and attractive living environment with direct connection to the landscape will help to reduce the pressure on central Moscow.

Sustainability is one of the key features of the IFC Moscow masterplan. Sustainability is not a matter of ecology alone, but involves the often quoted triad of ecology, economy and social aspects. Instead of relying on highly technical solutions, sustainability is guaranteed first and foremost by urban design. A compact city with small building blocks and moderate building heights in combination with a high level of mixed uses in short distances from each other increases walkability. Private car ownership can be reduced drastically as the city provides excellent public transport connections to Moscow metro, commuter trains and an extensive network of bicycle paths. The green rays and lake provide the means for the use and percolation of rain water and help regulating the cities climate.
